IAM Group Limited | Charity vs. Justice

There are so many arguments regarding the extremities difference of charity and justice.
IAM Group Limited, with its partner charities in Seoul, South Korea, Tokyo and Yokohama Japan,
Singapore, Cambodia, Africa and to the rest of the world invites you all to join us on how society perceive the two terms and what it really weighs among us.

The Difference

Charity is a social service. Charity provides direct services like food, clothing and shelter.
Justice is a social change. Justice promotes social change in institutions or political

Structures.

Charity responds to immediate needs.
Justice responds to long-term needs.

Charity is directed at the effects of injustice, its symptoms. Charity addresses problems that already exist. Otherwise put: love mops up.
Justice is directed at the root causes of social problems. Justice addresses the underlying structures or causes of these problems. Otherwise put: Justice tries to make sure the mess isn’t made to begin with.

Charity is private, individual acts.
Justice is public, collective actions.

  • Examples of charity include homeless shelters, food shelves, clothing drives, emergency services.

  • Examples of justice are legislative advocacy, changing policies and practices, political action.

  • In this alone, we already have a clear difference among the two. Now, we delve into the public side of it.

In so many cases, justice is deemed to be more important than charity. For instance, when a man is put in jail for a crime like murder, homicide or something which has caused life or lives to be destroyed, people would seek justice and nobody wants charity for that man. However, there are some who offers it. This is where issues arise and the conflict between the two emerges.

It may also be that it works hand in hand.

In some accounts, justice is asked because of the charity for the victims. Special cases like women or children being abused lead charity being given to them by other people. It is, in these circumstances equaled to empathy, pity or concern. Justice, on the other hand, is also asked for the victims to no longer put their lives in misery.

There are also times when each of the terms justice and charity function far from each other. The relevance between the two is deemed moot and academic. In cases where charity outreach is being done in Kenya, Africa while justice is being sought after a theft or robbery in Iowa, it makes no sense at all to put the two together.

What matters is, the thing that put justice and charity together and the conflict on which term really weighs more, also continue to inflict moral values among people. IAM Group Limited will continue to signify the two terms and emphasizes the importance it brings to what we do.
